Narrow AI
Also known as: Weak AI, ANI
AI built for a specific task or domain, which is what every deployed system today actually is.
What Narrow AI is
A translation system, a chess engine and a chat assistant are all narrow AI: capable inside their trained domain, with no general understanding transferring outside it.
How it works
Narrow systems are trained and evaluated against a defined task distribution. Even broad assistants remain narrow in the sense that their competence is bounded by training data and objectives.
Why it matters
Distinguishing narrow AI from general AI keeps expectations honest in procurement, policy and product planning.
