Human in the Loop

Also known as: HITL

Designing AI systems so a person reviews, approves or corrects the output at defined points.

What Human in the Loop is

Human oversight can sit before the action, after it, or on a sampled basis. The design question is which decisions require a person and how the interface makes review fast enough to be real.

How it works

Confidence thresholds route uncertain cases to reviewers, high-impact actions require explicit approval, and corrections feed back into evaluation sets and training data.

Why it matters

It is how organisations get AI leverage without accepting unbounded risk, and increasingly a regulatory expectation for consequential decisions.

Common uses

  • Content moderation escalation
  • Medical and legal draft review
  • Agent approval gates for payments or emails
  • Active learning loops

Strengths

  • Catches high-cost errors
  • Generates training signal

Watch for

  • Rubber-stamping when volume is high
  • Reduces throughput gains
