Content Provenance
Also known as: C2PA, Content Credentials
Cryptographically signed metadata that records how a piece of media was created and edited.
What Content Provenance is
Rather than trying to detect fakes after the fact, provenance attaches a verifiable history to authentic content, which platforms and viewers can check.
How it works
The C2PA specification defines signed manifests recording capture device, generation tool and edit history. Cameras, editing software and generative tools increasingly attach them, though metadata can be stripped in transit.
Why it matters
It is the most credible industry answer to synthetic media, and is being written into disclosure requirements in several jurisdictions.
Common uses

- →AI-generated content labelling
- →Stock and licensing workflows
