AlphaFold
A DeepMind system that predicts three-dimensional protein structure from amino acid sequence at accuracy that transformed structural biology.
What AlphaFold is
Protein folding was a decades-old grand challenge. AlphaFold produced predictions accurate enough to be used directly in research, and a public database released structures for a very large share of known proteins.
How it works
The model combines evolutionary sequence information with attention over residue pairs to predict spatial relationships, and outputs per-residue confidence so researchers know which regions to trust.
Why it matters
It is the clearest example of AI producing a genuine scientific breakthrough rather than a productivity gain, and its authors shared a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024.
