The platform provides a library of digital personas that mimic human speech patterns, lip-syncing movements, and facial expressions. Users can overlay these avatars onto customizable slide backgrounds, incorporate screen recordings, and add localized voiceovers in various languages. It effectively removes the need for physical cameras, studios, lighting equipment, or actors.

How people actually use it

Corporate teams primarily use Synthesia to scale internal communication and learning and development. Instead of recording a new video every time a product update occurs or a compliance policy changes, team leads use the tool to refresh the script and generate a new video in minutes. It is also common in sales, where account managers use the platform to generate personalized video pitches for hundreds of prospects simultaneously. The tool is rarely used for creative storytelling or high-end filmmaking, as the aesthetic remains distinctly corporate and structured.

Where it falls short

The primary limitation is the uncanny nature of the output. Despite improvements in generative technology, avatars often struggle with micro-expressions and natural hand gestures. They can appear rigid or disconnected from the tone of a script that requires genuine empathy or high emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the platform encourages a sedentary approach to information delivery. Because it is so easy to generate a talking head, many users default to "talking head" lectures even when a more engaging interactive guide or a different visual medium would serve the audience better. The software also struggles with complex, multi-layered video editing, meaning it is not a replacement for professional video editing software like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve.

Whether it builds skill

Using Synthesia does not teach you how to write for video, nor does it teach you how to direct talent, frame a shot, or edit a narrative. You are essentially delegating the production process to an algorithm. You might improve your prompt engineering or script-writing efficiency, but you are not developing the craftsmanship associated with visual communication. It shifts the user from being a creator to being a content manager. The tool does not force the user to confront the difficult parts of video production, which means that if you rely on it entirely, your ability to create truly original, high-impact content will likely atrophy rather than grow.
